sculpture update

It’s crunch time for our sculptures in the accelerated classes. The bodies need to be finished and clothed, and those heads!  The decision was made to use cotton balls and glue and a little paint to make them complete.  I’m sure more updates will follow in the days to come. :)

Enjoy these photos:

Just look at that George Washington! I cannot wait to see these figures in their finished glory.

The sculpture team has been hard at work, and here is an update that shows the continued work on the forearm areas.  Chicken wire plus paper mache equals some realistic bicep areas… hopefully. :-)

Sculpture project

I wanted to show off what the accelerated 5th and 6th grade classes are doing.

Since before I arrived at the school, these classes have been building sculptures of persons from the  Revolutionary War period.

We have frames made from wood. These frames will be fully-clothed ‘bodies’ someday. Right now we have been using chicken-wire and paper-mache to build up the arm areas.  The elbow areas actually have hinges and will bend.

Here are the heads that need to be painted.

The first heads were actually paper-mache balloons. We added clay but it was a total bust. The later head attempts were more successful, actual Styrofoam beauty-store heads were used, the surface was then packed with clay, and the details painted as you see above.

Later in the afternoon, we got together and started using the water/flour mixture and newspaper to cover the chicken wire arms.
