caricatures

This summer was busy for me. I know that I was supposed to take a break from teaching, but I never got a break from art.

I did several projects for people including a few caricatures and some spray-paint murals.  I will post some pics I guess.

Here are some caricatures that I have done for people:

As you can see, a caricature is a picture of a person with exaggerated features, and most of the time dressed up like someone famous or fictional. The boys in the top ones have entered the Star Wars universe, the next one Indiana Jones, the girl is an elf from Lord of the Rings, and the last one was a recent drawing of a couple, I found out that the man is really quiet and mellow… so I drew him as a teddy bear. Funny eh? Speaking of bears, I drew a girl as Pooh Bear, and in color!

We will learn about caricatures in the upper grades this year, I think it will be a fun unit.

I will show you all some of my spray paint mural stuff in a few weeks.

Secret of Kells

This cartoon is on Netflix, and for those of you that have Netflix, ask your parents if its ok and check it out this film.

The Secret of Kells is a very stylish film, and I want you to see this preview to show you that not every drawing has to be super-detailed in order to be ‘good’. As you will see here, some of these characters are very simple in design, but still very cool to look at.

Enjoy!

(Apologies for some of the audio issues with this one…)

Winnie the Pooh video

Here’s another cool video from the Disney animators. How to draw Pooh bear.

Please note how softly he draws, and how loose his arms are, while maintaining a tight grip on that pencil.  My guess is the type of pencil he was using is an ‘H’, but I could be wrong.

My people, look at these pictures and again note the neat patterns in his shell. There is structure in everything we see, we just have to look for it.

What did you guys draw this summer?  Does anyone want to comment about that?  If you started a blog, let me know and I will link you to this one.

Phoenix Comic-Con – with pictures

I did it.

With my small team of fellow art-fans, we loaded up into my car and went to the Comic Con in downtown Phoenix.

We then got into a line that was long and snaky, like a mini-Amazon river, but with costumed people all around us.

People chose to dress up as their favorite comic book characters, anime people, cartoon characters, video game characters… the list goes on. Some of the costumes made me scratch my head in wonder. It was really fun to see. Here are some of the costumed fans below.

One of the big draws to a convention is the famous people that show up.  The two main people that I wanted to see here I totally got to see. One of them was really close to me and my friends.  Here are the pictures:

Stan Lee. The creator of Spider-Man, the Hulk... and many more comics! He was shooting the breeze with friends and we took a bunch of pictures of him!

Leonard Nimoy... better known as Spock from the TV series (and movies) Star Trek. He was really funny, and had some humorous stories to share.

The other thing about a comic book convention is getting to meet the comic book artists themselves. I met a bunch of cool people, and bought some great artwork.  For the right price, these guys will actually draw something specifically for you.  The artists who were locals, I actually left them my information in case they wanted to come to our school and give some tips on drawing. Wouldn’t that be cool?

Here are some of the artists I got to hang out with:

Andy Carreon. I hope his name sounds familiar to you, he is the husband of our own Mrs. Carreon, and as you can see, he is very talented gentleman.

Well, I hope you enjoyed my reporting of these events from last weekend. The Comic-Con happens every year. The last two years it has been in Phoenix, and kids 12 and under get in free with a paying adult.  It’s a total blast, so save up your allowance money and you can come away with some inspiring art, most of which is one of a kind. :)

Phoenix Comic-Con

Even though school is out, and summer has begun, this weekend has a pretty fun event going on.

Untitled-1-300x225

For those of you who are interested in comic books and have parents that are cool and into comic books, check out this event that just started TODAY. It is the Phoenix Comicon.  “Comicon” is a run on word that is short for ‘comic convention’.

There is a whole variety of stuff to do down there even if you are not interested in comic books, people will be dressed up as characters from all sorts of TV shows and movies. I know for a fact that there will be Star Wars looking people down there as well.

Stan Lee will be there. He created Spider-Man, The Hulk and others...

I plan on attending Saturday, maybe I will see you there. It costs a little bit of cash for us adults, but kids 12 and under get in free with a paying adult. Click here for more details  ——->   Phoenix Comicon

I will post some pictures of my adventure this Saturday. Stay tuned!
