Secret of Kells

This cartoon is on Netflix, and for those of you that have Netflix, ask your parents if its ok and check it out this film.

The Secret of Kells is a very stylish film, and I want you to see this preview to show you that not every drawing has to be super-detailed in order to be ‘good’. As you will see here, some of these characters are very simple in design, but still very cool to look at.

Enjoy!

Another vid, this time on how to animate Eeyore.

(Apologies for some of the audio issues with this one…)

Winnie the Pooh video

Here’s another cool video from the Disney animators. How to draw Pooh bear.

Please note how softly he draws, and how loose his arms are, while maintaining a tight grip on that pencil.  My guess is the type of pencil he was using is an ‘H’, but I could be wrong.

3D animation with pigeons…

Can we really get enough 3D?  I don’t think so… Just remember that little videos like this one need someone to write up the plot, characters, and gags. Someone usually storyboards the action before it comes together and is put together in 3D, just like we learned in class.

Check out this funny video called Pigeon: Impossible.

Enjoy!

flipbook video

Filed under Grade 4 thru 6,video

Hey guys, here is a preview of coming attractions so-to-speak. I am interested in showing the upper grades how to make flipbooks next year.

Flipbooks are an easy and fun way for us to explore the world of animation, as you make your own movie of whatever you want.

A post-it note cube is good to use, but as you see in this video put out by a Canadian School, they used 3×5 cards clipped together.

The theme for them seemed to be like public service announcements like ‘recycling’ ‘earth day’ and anti-drug campaigns. Enjoy!

happy free comic book day

Hi guys,
In celebrating with the fact that it is the nationally held “free comic book day“, I wanted to post another video.

This guy is a big inspiration to me and I have shared his art in most of the upper grade classes. His work ignites MY imagination. :)

His name is Alex Ross. He is exactly my age, and he is a super-talented guy. As you watch this video, I want to remember that his images for all of his comic books are hand painted, not colored with a computer.  Specifically, all of his images are colored with water-color paint. Which is what they call a pretty tough ‘medium’ to work in.  Enjoy!

Wallace and Gromit puppeteer video

Hey gang.

Remember when I brought the ‘Wallace and Gromit‘ movie book to show you what storyboards are? Well, here’s a cool video that will show you some behind the scenes of their Were-Rabbit film, and the puppet-building involved. It’s really amazing.

Tangled video

I have a video to share from Disney animator, Glen Keane.

Tangled is out on dvd as of today. :-)

It’s awesome to watch how quickly his drawing comes together. It’s like the characters just fall out of his pencil! Enjoy!

(Did you notice the ‘drawing desk’ that he is sitting at? That is a special animation desk. Look again at how the paper that he is drawing on has little holes that actually hold it to the desk. The disc thing in the middle has a light behind it, and the animator can turn this on as needed. Did you also notice all of the drawings on the walls surrounding Glen’s desk? These pages are called ‘model sheets’. These papers actually assist the animator in keeping the facial features on Rapunzel the same. :) )

Painted hands video

I have a cool video to share.  It’s not finger painting, but painting on fingers… and hands. You’ll see.

I bet when this artist was a kid, he got in trouble for drawing all over his hands. :)

The wonderful hand painted artwork is by Italian artist Guido Daniele. I found the music annoying, but you can totally turn it down.
