The 4th thru 6th grade have been working on their flipbook projects for animation, and the competition is really heating up. Here are some pictures of the art process being pursued by them. Enjoy !

Just Go To Bed

We read another story in Kindergarten. Just Go to Bed by Mercer Mayer. It is one of the ‘Little Critter’ books. We had a lot of fun reading the story and talking about bedtime routines.

Continuous Line drawing

We explored some continuous line drawing exercises using a piece of paper with a hole torn out or cut-out of the center. The rules dictate that we cannot lift our pen/pencil/marker from the page until we run out of room. :)

Here are some pictures of the fun that we had in 2nd and 3rd grade with this activity. Please notice the different style choices that the students made, its very cool to see.

We figured out that the more holes one put in their paper, the crazier the design became. We also noticed how fun it was to make things out of the center shapes that we had cut from the original art.

Scientific comparisons were made between our designs and the centers of trees, and of some semi-precious gems like agates.

We read another book in Kinder. Go Away Dog was a story about a fearful boy and a friendly dog. We then drew the characters from the book.

Shape designs

We explored the use of overlap with our bag of shapes.

The directions, use about 10 shapes, and two colors to make a cool design.

If the colors touch diagonally, then you know you are doing it right.

Using the stencil shapes with the students is a fun way for them to stretch their imaginations. I also took time to mention how easy it would be for them as ‘big brothers/sisters’ to teach their siblings how to do this as well.

After we finished with our Zoo project, we have moved straight into our next unit for 1st thru 3rd grade, which is simply called *design*.

We learned how to take simple shapes and use them to make art, specifically things we see all around us.

The objective is for the students to understand the role of shapes in the world around us, and for them to use shapes in their many years to come in constructing art objects, such as animals, people, cars, buildings… you name it, the object CAN be drawn with a simple shape first.

I split the students up into groups, and each group shares a bag of six shapes. Some of these shapes you may see in these pictures as little pink or blue pieces of cardboard. Pennies, and a tape dispenser were also used. Enjoy!

The February art student of the month is CP, and she did such a good job on not only drawing her zoo animals, but she colored them very nicely as well.
